Chrome Tango: Posture & Axis with Shonda Leanne

This is the first lesson in Shonda's Chrome Tango series, and everything that follows is built on it.

Posture is about presentation, setting intention and embodying intent, through deep core engagement and supporting your pelvis throughout movement. Axis is your center of gravity: the alignment that lets you feel tension extend up through the top of your head and down through your feet into the floor. Think of a line that starts above your head and runs straight down through where you press into the floor. When you find it, the sensation feels like an internal invincibility, like your muscles are hugging and supporting you through every possibility.

You'll work through the mechanics piece by piece. Posture at the shoulders and hips, and where the feet are placed. Shoulders down without over-arching. Pelvis tucked and core engaged to activate the glutes. Weight centered on the toe box, pressing into the floor. Toward the end, you'll see a direct comparison between rounded posture and tall posture, so you can watch the difference rather than only hearing it described.

The Sensation Layer turns the mechanics into felt information. You'll scan your body and ask where you feel most secure and supported. Don't resist gravity, use it. Use the floor as support, because the more energy you give the ground, the more it gives back. Breathing through your diaphragm, you'll test micro-shifts and notice exactly where the balanced feeling starts to slip, and what adjustment brings it back: widening or shortening your feet, re-engaging your shoulders or core, recentering your weight on your axis.

How to integrate this into your practice

Before you move on to the rest of the series, take the traditional pole position and lunge included at the end of this lesson and test yourself. Now that you understand the mechanics, you can feel whether your alignment is actually holding, or whether you're compensating somewhere. That check-in is the whole point.

Return to this lesson any time your movement starts to feel unstable or effortful. Posture is not a shape you hold once. It's the line you keep coming back to.

Start here. This is the foundation for the rest of the Chrome Tango series.
