Chrome Tango: Weight Transfers with Shonda Leanne

This lesson is the second in Shonda's Chrome Tango series, and it's where posture becomes movement. Movement is the transfer of weight. When you maintain your alignment and let the weight shifts become instinctual, steps stop feeling like steps. They feel effortless and thoughtless, and that effortlessness is what becomes fluidity.

You'll build through four named pole tango steps, each one an extension of the one before it. Figure-four steps around the pole teach you to actively press into the toe box and into the ground with every step, drilled forward, side to side, and backward. Swivels isolate the upper body from the lower, holding your posture and alignment while the hips stay free. The ocho extends the swivel into full gliding steps with a precise, sharp turn to change direction, keeping connection with your partner, the pole. And the giro travels that pattern all the way around the pole, where the weight transfer becomes so subtle it's almost invisible, especially at speed.

The Sensation Layer is where the technique becomes feeling. As you complete these steps, you start to feel like a pendulum, repeating the same motion endlessly, unchanging unless you intend it to change. That's the thing to listen for. Not whether the step is correct, but whether it's carrying you.

How to integrate this into your practice

Play with speed and levels and notice what feels natural versus what feels stiff. Stepping with confidence, head and focus up and away from your feet, feels fierce, like strutting down a runway or entering a room unafraid to take up space. Return to these four steps whenever your movement feels effortful or over-managed. Ask yourself: are you thinking about the step, or are you letting the weight take you there?
