Body Awakening: Bring Your Body Online
This is a full body awakening sequence from movement artist Alise Fox, designed to bring your body online before you move. She works through the whole system with breath leading every step: spinal activation, scapular activation, head and chest opening, hip flexor release, shoulder conditioning, and full rotations through the rotator cuffs. She also layers in core work, stability, strength, and control through leg lifts and a slow circle down into a V, so you leave the warm-up genuinely awake rather than just loosened up.
The goal is availability. When your body is activated and connected to breath, your movement has somewhere to go. Nothing feels stiff or rigid, because everything is already online and ready to respond. That's what makes this more than a warm-up, it's a practice in waking up the parts of you that tend to stay quiet, so your flow can actually use them.
This is the warm-up that pairs with Alise's dynamic base work lesson, Drop Like a Feather. If you've already moved through this sequence, head straight over to that lesson and pick up where the sequence begins. But this also stands entirely on its own. Use it any time you're about to dance or flow and want your body as available as possible, and come back to it as often as you like, daily or a few times a week.
How to integrate this into your practice
Make this your on-ramp. Run it before any session where you want to move fluidly, and notice how much more your body offers you once it's awake. You don't have to take every piece, if the deeper core work or the V isn't for you today, keep what serves you and leave the rest.
Then take it further. Once you're warm and online, open the Fluid Body Prompt Book, pull a prompt, and see what's available to you now that your body is ready to respond. If you've been in the Lab for a while and built up some movement vocabulary, this is where it comes alive, warm body, fresh prompt, and everything you've been collecting, all in play at once.
