The Marchetti Split: Contraction to Bloom
In this lesson, Dopamine breaks down the Marchetti split, a shape that lives entirely in the contrast between contraction and release. It feels like holding yourself tight, then slowly blossoming into the final shape: engagement first, then an amount of release. The bloom is what makes it look effortless, and this lesson shows you how to earn it.
Dopamine takes the shape apart step by step. You'll start with the outside leg hang and a kickstand inside arm, then bring the chest up toward the pole, pulling with the outside arm. From there, the inside knee comes toward the face and you make contact at the side of the body, at the bend of the hip. The make-or-break moment is the release of the inside arm: once you feel stable enough, you condense the body, wrap the arm around the thigh to find the pole thumb-up, and release. Watch for the two things that undo it, a collapsed chest or a trapped top hand.
The Sensation Layer is where the shape blooms. As you set up and communicate with all of your contact points, there's a moment where your core is tightly crunched, gathering every area of your body together. Then you make contact with the pole and find you can bloom: the arm stays strong, the legs stay long and pointed through the toes, but the spine releases and stretches, and the head falls back. That's the shift, holding, then blossoming, and it's the moment you become weightless.
How to integrate this into your practice
Play with the contraction-to-release, the bloom, in other shapes too, not just the Marchetti. Notice how giving yourself that dramatic contraction first buys you more time to anchor, and then to articulate into the shape. The tighter and more intentional the gather, the more expansive the release feels. Return to this any time your shapes feel effortful, and look for the bloom hiding inside them.
Ready to take it further? Open the Fluid Body Prompt Book, pull a prompt, and bring new expression to your shapes. Take the bloom, the moment of release, and see how many ways you can travel into and out of it.
Prerequisite: a confident Jasmine. The Marchetti builds on the shape and engagement you've already found there, so bring a Jasmine you can hold with ease.
